Strategies Unlimited has released its new report: The Worldwide Market for LEDs – Market Review and Forecast 2015. The worldwide LED market is forecasted to grow to more than $22 billion in 2019. Ten companies accounted for more than 65 percent of the LED market. Strategies Unlimited arrived at these figures after analyzing market demand as well as the supply-side activities of more than 50 LED component suppliers.

This report analyzes LEDs used in the following applications: lighting, automotive, displays, mobile devices, signs, and other categories.

REPORT HIGHLIGHTS:

  • The forecast is broken out by material type and package type and evaluates the global market for low-power, mid-power, high-power, and super-high power LEDs.
  • Lighting now accounts for nearly 35 percent of global revenues and has grown 15 percent since 2013 and will continue to grow through 2019.
  • The TV/Monitor backlight segment grew in 2011, but revenue has continued to decline and will decline further through 2019.
  • The automotive market is showing steady growth of 10 percent through 2019.
  • China’s portion of global revenues grew to 15 percent from just a 2 percent share several years ago.

Samsung has decided to discontinue its LED lamp business in all countries outside of its home operations and headquarters in South Korea. In recent weeks, news had been circulating that Samsung was planning to announce it would leave the LED lighting business altogether. While the new development stopped short of a complete divestment with Samsung continuing to keep its LED luminaire business, the news is proof that increasing competition from lower-priced Chinese competitors is making the overall LED market less profitable for most manufacturers.

The US Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science plans to announce a funding opportunity on August 11, 2014, for the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Programs. Under this opportunity, DOE will seek applicants for funding directed toward FY15 Phase I projects.
